Visiting in person
Visiting High Street Cemetery
An active burying ground that has stood since 1681, at the top of High Street off Main Street (Route 228) in South Hingham. This page helps you find your way on the ground, and meet a few of the people who rest here. Please walk gently; families still visit.
Find your way on the ground
From anywhere in the cemetery, this points you to the recorded graves nearest you, and how far each one lies. It uses your device location in your browser only, to measure distance; nothing is sent anywhere.
Your location is used in your browser only, to measure distance; nothing is sent anywhere. Live location covers the 376 graves whose coordinates are recorded, the rest, including the Whiting walk, await a field day with a GPS unit.
Only 376 graves have confirmed coordinates so far, so a name you want may not yet appear here. The map of the grounds shows everything we have placed.
Ways to explore
Start with someone
If you would rather begin with a life than a map, here are two ways in.
- Capt. Theophilus Cushing 1657 – 1718 A farmer and selectman, son of Daniel the town clerk and grandson of Matthew Cushing, who crossed from England and helped settle Hingham in 1638. One family, reaching back nearly three centuries in this ground. Open →
- The Whitings and Fearings a short walk at Liberty Plain Two South Hingham families joined by marriage in a single generation, whose 1905 memorial chapel still stands in the cemetery. Six stones, about twenty minutes. Open →
Practical notes
The cemetery is open to visitors during daylight hours. It is a working burial ground cared for by its association, not by this project; please treat the stones and any mourners with care.
Tip: in your phone's browser menu, choose "Add to Home Screen." The site will sit like an app and keep working where the signal is poor, exactly where you will be standing.
